Following the decision of Russian Ministry of Natural Resources dated December 2002, the research and development institute Rosgiproles prepared a project concerning accelerated assortment growth, namely sawlog and pulpwood, www.bumprom.ru informs. Total area needed comprises 1.8 million hectares of forestry. The project is to guarantee resource stability for pulp and timber enterprises of European Russia by the means of sustainable forestry based on modern technologies.
On January 13, Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill took 196 thousand hectares of forests in Russian Karelia on lease for 49 years. At present the mill is preparing the general plan for forestry policy and road-building and applies for FSC voluntary certification. The full start up of the project is planned for January 2008.
