North-West Timber Company is through with the biggest investment project in the history of the pulp and paper industry of Russia, the company's press-service informs. PM#9 was officially launched at a new paper factory of Neman Pulp and Paper Mill.
The project started in April 2004 with signing a contract for purchasing a papermaking machine in Great Britain. 60.000 ton/yr equipment was installed at a newly constructed paper factory #3 (18.900 sq.m).
The last papermaking machine of the former Soviet Union was installed in 1988 at Vyborg Pulp and Paper Mill, which means the project of Neman Mill is the biggest non-state investment in the pulp and paper industry of Russia.
PM#9 will produce fine papers 50 to 320 g/m2 aimed at replacing exported products (office papers A and B+, offset papers for art editions and infantile literature, moisture resistant papers, wallpaper base).
Total volume of investments in modernization constitutes $450 million. The costs for the paper factory and the equipment exceeded $50 million.
Neman Mill continues with the construction of a pulp line, which is scheduled to start production end 2006. After that Neman becomes the first pulp mill in Russia without chlorine pulp bleach process (TCF-bleach). After investing more that Euro 30 million the mill's annual output is planned to reach 120 thousand tons of bleached TCF-pulp.
