Metsa Botnia plans to build a pulp mill in Vologda region of Russia, www.bumprom.ru informs with reference to Vedomosti newspaper and Leonid Iogman, chief of the economic department of Vologda region.
According to Leonid Iogman, $1 million facility will be located at the west part of the region though he did not mention any terms.
Vice-president of Metsa Botnia, Anniki Rintala confirmed that the company is looking for construction site in Russia. She underlined the necessity to solve the problems of raw materials and logistics, to study local laws thoroughly. According to Anniki Rintala, the final decision to construct a greenfield mill in Russia might be made in a couple of years.
Metsa Botnia began business in Russia three years ago from a Euro 60 million sawmill in Leningrad region processing 200 thousand m3 of wood annually. Company's management mentioned then a possibility of adding a $900 million pulp mill to it.
Stakeholders of Metsa Botnia seem to have similar plans. According to Lori Peltola, Metsaliitto Group keeps up with Metsa Botnia's researches. In case Metsa Botnia is ready for a pulp mill in Russia, Metsaliitto might share the risks with another stakeholder UPM-Kymmene.
Beginning from summer 2005, Stora Enso is looking for possible pulp mill location. After the meeting of its management with the Minister of Natural Resources of Russia Jury Trutnev and the director of Rosleskhoz Valery Roshchupkin local press informed about investments of Euro 1 billion and the plans to build 1 million tn/yr mill by 2010.
