Svetogorsk Pulp and Paper Mill launched a new cardboard grade for juice packaging, www.bumprom.ru informs. Next year the mill plans $40 million modernization of the PM producing the new board for aseptic packaging.
On commenting on the event, general director of JSC Svetogorsk Sergei Pondar underlined that Russian enterprises haven's produced coated board for juices before. The material will be shipped to Tetra Pack, which previously imported it.
Fedor Chumak, director of Tetra Pack branch in St. Petersburg, confirmed the fact adding that Tetra Pack used only imported Scandinavian materials for converting juice packaging. According to him, during the next 2 years the demand for it will grow 5-6 times.
Tetra Pack is especially interested in local producers as it opens a new factory in Moscow region in February 2007 with planned production capacity 4 billion items a year. After the start up, total capacity of company's local businesses will grow 5 times as the new enterprise will be the major producer of liquid packaging in Russia and CIS countries. Tetra Pack plans to increase the share of local raw materials up to 50%. According to FINAM, Tetra Pack controls more than 60% of the packaging market in Russia now.
Svetogorsk Pilp and Paper Mill (Leningrad region) is the largest producer of office paper in Russia. International Paper took over it in 1998. Before that the mill belonged to Tetra Laval. In 2005, Svetogorsk churned up 339.9 thousand tons of pulp, 248.6 thousand tons of paper, 53.2 thousand tons of board. Net sales comprised RUR 8.8 billion (app. $295 million), net profit amounted to RUR 1.3 billion (app. $43 million).
