During the six months 2005, the sales volumes of Mondi Business Paper Sales (Moscow office of Mondi Business Paper managing sales in Russia and CIS countries) skyrocketed to 30% compared with the first half-year 2004.

Belarus: A Euro 1 million project

Ukraine: Dnepropetrovsk Mill announces half-year results
During the six months 2005, Dnepropetrovsk Paper Mill churned out 14.1 thousand tons of paper and board, which constituted an upturn of 4 thousand tons compared with the same period a year ago. The mill manufactured 5.6 thousand tons of printing paper, 345 tons of cover paper, 619 tons of brown paper. The total output of board and paper for corrugated showed the largest increase of 3.1 thousand tons. During January–June 2005 the mill produced 7.5 thousand tons of board and paper for corrugated.

Russia: The Chinese are building $500 million mill
Construction of Russian-Chinese greenfield pulp mill started on June 27 in the Chita region, near the Chinese border, www.fis.ru informs. The idea of the project first appeared in cooperation agreement between the Chita region and the neighbouring Heilongjiang province dated September 16, 2003. In August 2004, FGUP Sibgiprobum prepared a construction plan for Russian company Zabinkom, international paper holding Syda (China), and technical and economic cooperation company Huachen (China). The main investments of $500 million are coming from the Chinese partners.

Russia: Arkhangelsk Mill reports results
In June, Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill cooked 68.6 thousand tons of pulp, which constituted a slight upturn of 1.5% compared with June 2004, the mill’s press-service informs. The mill churned out 6.8 thousand tons of paper (the same as in 2004), 39.6 thousand tons of containerboard (+3.5%), 11.3 million of corrugated products (the same as in 2004).

North-West Timber Industries Confederation asked Finnish Forest Industries Federation and Paper Workers Union to prove justification of the 47-days’ lockout appealing to the fact of considerable losses for Russian timber enterprises and exporters.

Stora Enso is discussing with the Russian government plans to build a Euro 1 billion greenfield softwood pulp mill by 2010. Its capacity is estimated at 1% of world pulp production.

Ukraine: Rubezhansk Mill to expand production
On June 16–17, president of DS Smith (British stakeholder of JSC Rubezhansky Cardboard and Package Mill) Anthony Thorn attended the World Economic Forum, a mini Davos, organized by the government of Ukraine in Kiev in order to detail a raft of political and economic reforms it is implementing for attracting further foreign investments.
